3 Things I Wish I Knew Before Pursing My Acting Career

If you’re thinking about pursuing a career in the arts, you’ll want to read on for my tips. I’ve been acting since 2013, when I started studying acting at NYU, and have learned a few things along the way that might help you achieve your goals faster.

Start Your Acting Career ASAP Because It May Take A While

I wish I would have started my acting career earlier because it can take quite a while. So my advice to you is if you want to become an actor, you should start your acting career as soon as possible. It can take a while for auditions to come your way, so don’t wait around. Take the initiative and start networking, start getting into classes, and start getting on set.

Don't Pursue An Acting Career Without A Plan

It is important to have a plan when pursuing an acting career. Without a plan, it is easy to get sidetracked and end up doing things that are not necessarily in your best interest. Picking the right mentor, acting school, getting involved in acting clubs and organizations, and networking are all important steps in developing a solid plan.

Your Look Will Book You

It’s called show business for a reason. Often times your talent doesn’t get you the job, the majority of the time it’s your look, your energy, and your essence. To be successful in this industry, you need to have a certain look or persona that can get you bookings and roles. Acting lessons can help you develop this look and persona, and will also help you learn how to act in specific types of scenes. A very prominent industry leader once told me, “Pick a look and stick with it”. I would suggest you develop a “bookable look” and stick with it!

I learned some of these lessons the hard way, and I was a bit reluctant to learn them, but I had to be open to things I didn’t know, and once I did-pursuing an acting career became much more tangible.
